Samsung Holding Back On DRAM Production Samsung Electronics Co. will cut back on DRAM production to protect against falling prices on the world market, according to a spokesman for the industry's largest chip maker. The Seoul-based company plans to suspend operation of its 16-Mbyte DRAM plants several days each month starting in June until year-end, resulting in 20 fewer days of production this year than last. That will mean monthly production of the devices will slide from 14 million chips to 12 million.

Last March, Samsung announced similar plans to cut monthly output of 4-Mbyte DRAM from 8 million to 4 million in the second half of this year.

By stabilizing the supply-demand situation, Samsung expects profitability to ultimately improve, said a spokesman. Other DRAM makers are boosting production capacity and new companies are moving into the market, so Samsung's decision is considered pre-emptive.
