What would have happened in 1929 if we'd had the same widespread distribution of handguns that we have today?

Hmm, I'll have to think about that for a while... ok, I'm done. In 1929, there were no restrictions on gun ownership at all, and gangsters bought automatic weapons by the score (in fact, they are the ones who kept the Thompson company from going broke until the winds of WWII inspired the gov't to buy some). Guns were plentiful and cheap ("pocket guns" could be bought mail order for less than $10.00, including shipping).

I once asked an old guy I met who used to be a sheriff's deputy in southern New Mexico (pre WW I) what it was like to be in a town where just about everybody wore a gun. His reply? "Well, folks were a lot more polite back then ..."

I think we should confiscate hammers and impose restrictions on all people who own them.
