A: Toshiba Marries CD-RW With DVD-ROM

Jul 30, 1999 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- The first CD-RW drive
equipped with DVD-ROM readability hits the market on Aug. 2 from
Toshiba's disk products division.

Set to ship in September, the SD-R1002 drive provides the rewritability
of a CD-RW drive with the high-capacity storage of DVD-ROM.

"This drive frees people from having to choose one or the other," said
Bob Katzive, an analyst at Freeman & Associates, a market researcher.
"It gives VARs the chance to offer both capabilities in a drive that
costs less and takes less space than two drives with the same
capabilities."

Toshiba designed the SD-R1002 as a bridge product, said Kathy
Longfellow, Toshiba senior product manager for optical products.

"It gives customers a way to transition to 17 gigabyte per disk
DVD-ROM, while providing backward compatibility with CD-RW," Longfellow
said.

The drive also enables users to use lower-cost 650-megabyte CD-RW media
for local backup and other applications.

Pricing was not yet available.
