Hi, Craig,
The Rothschilds were the ones who had advance news of Napoleon's defeat via courier pigeon. But a funny aspect of the story is that they had this information because the financed Wellington! They profited from advance trading knowledge, yes, but in fact they contributed significantly to Napoleon's defeat. Of course, the Rothschilds were also notorious for manipulating markets with false bad news, acts that would today land them in prison.
I agree with your comments, though. Daytrading is a business like any other, only harder than most. You have to be smart and professional to succeed. I also agree that the prime purpose of work is to put bread on the table for your family. To succeed at this should be a matter of pride.
My phrase "selfish" was perhaps ill-chosen. From the standpoint of providing for ones family, that is not selfishness at all. But many seek to justify daytrading through its imagined benefit to society. I think you, instead, have hit the nail on the head: it is a valid job, which supports ones family. And at least it doesn't hurt society, as one might claim running a casino does.
Yours,
