I would agree with you except we have already had discussions here about sticky portals vs. non.... I'm not sure what the current buzzword is on WS for this, but there are empty no-content portals out there like, say Lycos where there is a search engine, a little light content and thats about it, and on the other side of the spectrum is AOL, a very sticky user community. Go2net with SI is somewhere between these two extremes, not only with SI but also some of the stock commentary (Fleckenstein and others) is kind of Motley Fool-esque, high content.

Your comments about passthru portals apply more to lycos and some others, even yahoo I would say, JMO
