Tellabs Completes Acquisition of Alcatel's DSC Communications Businesses in Europe

July 30, 1999 04:03 PM

LISLE, Ill., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs (TLAB) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Alcatel's DSC Communications businesses in Europe, a move that extends Tellabs' global presence and heightens its ability to meet the growing demand for fiber transmission networks worldwide.

"This acquisition enhances our ability to deliver high-speed transport solutions to our global customers," said Brian J. Jackman, president of Global Systems and Technology at Tellabs.

DSC Communications, which is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a leading provider of managed, high-speed transport solutions based on Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) technology. The acquisition also covers business operations in Drogheda, Ireland; sales and support offices in England, India and Poland; and an interest in FIBCOM India Ltd., a joint venture with Indian Telephone Industries Ltd. in India.

"By combining our global reach and complementary technologies, we will be able to maximize our ability to develop and deliver SDH and optical transport solutions," said Peter Viereck, executive vice president and chief operating officer of DSC Europe, who will lead the new Tellabs Denmark.

Under terms of the acquisition, originally announced on May 26, Tellabs paid approximately $110 million in cash for the European businesses.
