Hypergrowth such as Amazon's is a pointless excercise in corporate charity, plain and simple. It is giving away 1 dollar bills for 90 cents, at the expense of the public shareholder. It in no way has ANYTHING to do with running a profitable business.

The only reason "hypergrowth" exists today is because for the last 3 years there have been billions of dollars of speculative capital POURED into internut stocks. Without that money, these ridiculous giveaway-companies would have never existed. And when the money dries up, how long do you think Amazon can keep giving away $1 for .90? According to Glenn, it will be about summer of 2000.

Bezos hedged his stock quite a while ago with that gargantuan swiss franc call offering. Why should he care? No wonder he goes on TV and says ridiculous things like "We have no idea when we'll be profitable. Please keep giving us more cash to burn. Oh, and we plan to lose more and more money each quarter."
