Vodafone AirTouch Plc and GTE Corp began rollouts of wireless data services that will bring low-priced wireless Internet access to much of the U.S. by early next year without wireless modems.

The services work with digital telephones and a cable and don't require a special modem like existing wireless services, including Ricochet.

Airtouch said its wireless Internet will be included as part of the basic wireless telephone services initially, and after an introductory period it will be priced at monthly fees starting at about $5.
