BK:see IRS article below; you made good points but your article fell on deaf ears, as most good articles and commentaries do here. No collection of taxes means the entire system will fall apart very quickly.
Based on all I have studied about the IRS efforts for a long time, I don't think they will come close to making it; I believe that they will have to go to a national sales tax (assuming the economic system does not collapse).
No one wants to pay taxes; most will rejoice when the IRS does not function next year; but, our society can not survive, as you pointed out, without tax collection, on a federal, state and local level. Espically on the local level- no taxes mean no police, fire, other basic services. Only the idiots will pray for IRS and other tax agencies to not make it and be able to continue collecting taxes.
<< IRS Has Not Replaced Any of Its Old Mainframe Computers
excite.com. Back in May, 1997, the then-head of the IRS's computer upgrade project, Arthur Gross, revealed that the IRS had 63 different mainframes. They all needed upgrading, he said. He's not with the IRS any longer.
The new Commissioner of the IRS, computer man Charles Rossotti, says the IRS is just about ready for final testing. The system is compliant. But the mainframes are still the core of the system.
So, they really did not have to be replaced. I wonder how Mr. Gross got so confused.
