Freeman is holding out
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) The Green Bay Packers welcomed their veteran players to training camp practices Friday, but were still without their key passing combination.
Wide receiver Antonio Freeman officially became a holdout and quarterback Brett Favre was with his wife and newborn daughter.
Freeman, an unrestricted free agent before the Packers designated him their franchise player, is still hammering out terms of a new contract with the team.
"We'd love for Antonio to be in camp," coach Ray Rhodes said. ''But as we all know, when you're doing contracts, sometimes that stuff takes time. But I'm certain Antonio is working hard and preparing himself to come to training camp, and I hope it will be solved very shortly."
Favre is expected to join the team Saturday. The veterans who did arrive were ready to go, Rhodes said.
"For the most part, the veterans are in good shape," Rhodes said. ''The guys are going to be a little rusty, but I saw some good things. I was very pleased with the way they reported."
Rhodes said physical testing went well when the veterans arrived Thursday night.
"We're in the best shape we've been in for some time," he said. ''It will take a couple of days before we get the timing down."
