Dave, thanks for putting us onto the Digital Fountain site. I've downloaded the white paper and will study it later. One paragraph that I noticed in glancing suggests that they are using a form of algorithm- driven forward error correction not unlike some that I've seen before.

"Notice that in order to reconstruct the document, the Digital Fountain system requires that each client receive beads of aggregate length just slightly longer than the original document before recovery is possible. In the representative setting diagrammed above, a 2.5% reception overhead (500 beads) is needed above and beyond the theoretical minimum of 20,000 beads at each client. In return for this small amount of overhead, there are enormous gains in encoding and decoding speeds as compared with previous technologies. These points are described in more detail in the performance sections of this paper."

On another level, I can loosely surmise that maybe their obviation of TCP and classical forms of error correction might be accomplished by connectionless UDP forwarding in ways which might not take into account the general health of Internet routes from the standpoint of fair weighting and utilization, but let me review this in a more deliberate fashion before forming any opinions that I may live to regret later on. It certainly is interesting.

Regards, Frank Coluccio
