TMSSequoia Releases SpectrumFix(R) 1.0; Revolutionary Software Technology That Transforms Color Scans Into Superior Images for OCR, Document Imaging and Forms Processing
PR Newswire - July 28, 1999 20:24

STILLWATER, Okla., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- TMSSequoia (OTC Bulletin Board: TMSS) today announced the availability of the application version of SpectrumFix(R) 1.0. Completed July 23, SpectrumFix(R) is new technology for creating superior black and white images from color or gray scale scanners.

This new technology can be a great aid to OCR (Optical Character Recognition) functions, and especially helpful to automated forms processing using OCR. SpectrumFix can easily complete functions that previously required expensive image enhancement hardware boards for grayscale (not color) scanners that perform dynamic thresholding to improve background removal (shading). With its entirely new software approach, SpectrumFix works to transform images previously impossible to OCR into ones easy to OCR. SpectrumFix executes very fast (less than 1.0 second per full size color scan) on standard Pentium PCs, and performs many more sophisticated operations, such as multiple color dropout.

Explaining the benefits of SpectrumFix, Dana Allen, TMSSequoia's CEO and President, said, "Here's a real world example of a use for SpectrumFix. On one form, there may be blue and red shading with black text, but the user desires the black type only. Yet the next image -- an UPS carbon copy shipping slip -- has red and black guide text and faint light-blue carbon text. Here, the user wants the blue carbon text only. SpectrumFix can recognize each and suppress the shading in the first image by just extracting the black text as black. While on the second image, it will turn the black and red text to white and the faint light-blue carbon text to black."

Allen further commented, "We're really excited about this new technology. Its capabilities open up new uses for both the low cost color scanners that are now being sold at rates of over 500,000 per month and the high speed color production scanners that have come to market recently. We have been working on this technology since 1995 and are, to the best of our knowledge, first to market with a software version. SpectrumFix 1.0 is even faster than the preview version demonstrated at AIIM."

The SpectrumFix technology was previewed by TMSSequoia at the international trade conference, AIIM '99 (Association for Information and Image Management) held recently in Atlanta. There it earned a "Best of AIIM Show" award by Imaging and Document Management Magazine. This prestigious award is given annually for products that demonstrate significant innovation and impact on the image and information management industry.

SpectrumFix works throughout the color spectrum and is able to perform similar functions on grayscale images. It is not at all limited to forms, and can even pull multiple specified hues out of highly complex images such as color magazine ads. The SpectrumFix application provides a split-viewing screen for quick feedback on how different selections affects the output image. It can run automatically or allow user control over each image. On full size 150-dpi 24 bit color scans, SpectrumFix is capable of processing the image in less than 1.0 seconds on a single chip Pentium II.

SpectrumFix is now available as an application for reading images from disk and scanners. Future planned versions include a TWAIN Filter that can "filter" the image when other applications call the scanner through SpectrumFix, and a developer's toolkit. It outputs images in color, grayscale or black and white formats.
