In Christ's day there were no "Christians". Followers of the Gospel (good news) or The Word did not start calling themselves that until an obscure Roman General coined the term. The followers of this new philosophy, both an outgrowth of and repudiation of classic Judaism adopted the term which was meant to be derisive.

The rest, as they say, is history.
