Chuzz, Hi!!!
RE: But I believe that synergies with other operations will keep IBM in the PC business. However, I don't think it unlikely that they might look to Dell to subcontract their assembly business.
I believe that IBM will dump it all within five years...they are making so much money on the service end...their technology is not doing that poorly either...Yes, I have heard rumor after rumor up here and no doubt I don't like rumors...but, granted you must understand these are folks I know very well...very well...not the typical looking for attention so I'll tell ya all this one... Frankly, the information this thread has pushed since it's existence has overwhelming proved that the DELL model could target any particular PC manufacturer and wipe it out...I believe our "PAIN TO CAUSE MUCH PAIN" was a perfectly worded hint by Michael...If it wasn't PAIN dropping 40% then I don't know what to call it.. :o) CPQ IMO is crippled for a long long long time...their reputation has been shattered...at least a few folks that spend some big bucks told me that at Chelsea Pier... :o) DELL is not only the best they are fast becoming the preferred and IMO more accepted each day as the only company to do business with... One other reallllly big revenue growth opportunity I see for DELL is this reputation of handing a huge cost savings to anyone that deals with DELL...This is for sale..I believe that the new ISP is going to be the eventual "NIRVANA" where DELL hooks up the world so to speak... Every time I re-read one of Michael's speeches I get a stronger feeling that their expertise from dealing with the Direct Model for 15 years has created an opportunity to save anyone else mega bucks..I'm betting they are going to link the Premier Pages some day soon ...And, this is just a start! :o) Once other corporations find out what DELL has done for them...the money they have saved them...the organizational "skills" DELL has created...This is what I dream of.. A few paragraphs that has caused a few of these "dreams":
........THE DELL ADVANTAGE.......
"I BELIEVE THE ABILITY TO BUILD AND EXTEND DIRECT CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST OPPORTUNITIES AFFORDED TO COMPANIES BY THE INTERNET...... "COMPANIES THAT EFFECTIVELY MANAGE THE CONTENT OF CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS WILL LOOK FOR WAYS TO INCREASE THE FREQUENCY OF INTERACTIONS WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS BY SEEKING ALLIED INFORMATION OR, PUT ANOTHER WAY, CONTENT THAT IS ADJACENT TO KNOWN CUSTOMER INTERESTS AND DESIRES. FOR A COMPANY LIKE DELL, FOR EXAMPLE, THIS COULD MEAN CONTENT ALLIANCES WITH MULTIMEDIA COMPANIES PRODUCING INFORMATION TARGETED TO THE BUSINESS ORIENTATION AND HIGH-END DEMOGRAPHICS OF OUR CUSTOMER BASE. THE POINT IS TO SEEK OPPORTUNITIES TO DEEPEN YOUR ABILITY TO REACH AND TOUCH THE CUSTOMERS, AND GAIN A GREATER SHARE OF WHAT WE BELIEVE IS A FIXED AMOUNT OF TIME THAT CUSTOMERS WANT TO BE INTERACTIVE IN ANY GIVEN DAY.... THE INTERNET IS TRULY FUELING A POWER SHIFT, MOVING CONTROL INTO THE HANDS OF CUSTOMERS. ALTHOUGH WE KNEW EARLY ON HOW IMPORTANT THE INTERNET WOULD BE, THE ASPECT OF OUR INDUSTRY THAT HAS SURPRISED ME THE MOST OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS IS HOW RAPIDLY SHIFT IS OCCURRING. AS CUSTOMERS BECOME MORE INDEPENDENT AND MORE IN CONTROL, THEY WILL INCREASINGLY BECOME LESS DEPENDENT ON ANY FORM OF INTERMEDIARY, AND THE COMPANIES THAT DO NOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO DISINTERMEDIATE THEIR SUPPLY AND DISTRIBUTION CHAIN WILL BE GRAVELY CHALLENGED."
Chuzz...It's a no brainer...If companies wish to stay in business...they need to go direct..Just so happy that I listened to everyone on this thread when they told me the DELL model was unbeatable...
