Can one still sell short against the box?
Never done it myself, but that old maneuver
let a person lock in a profit without incurring
an immediate tax liability.
I can sell short 500 shares of LSI Monday at 50,
and buy them back Thursday at 47, subjecting myself
to a $1500 short term capital gain.
If I sold my own 500 shares it would be a $15,000
long term capital gain; plus I'd be restarting the
12-month clock when I buy the LSI back again.
Can also insure gains using options.
