CKFR is in a position to endure grief as a consequence of this fragmentation and mixed mode of service delivery.

While Checkfree will certainly endure grief, I think the banks will experience it more so. This is the time it benefits Checkfree to be the background processor acting under the pretense they represent the bank. When the customer service s**t hits the fan, it is the banks who have tried to take control of some payments, but not all payments, who will feel the grief of customer dissatisfaction. Furthermore, the banks will need a full force of customer service reps to handle this load of inquiries. Wells Fargo has stated that online banking is reason enough for customers to switch banks. I suspect by the same token, a bad experience may push customers away. Portals, American Express, and most banks will continue to use Checkfree exclusively. It is the greedy banks who are assuming the risk of losing customers to those who provide a better service. Hardly seems worth it, again considering it will be hard for the banks to reach economies of scale doing it alone.
