I think the front line police officers, as opposed to the chiefs, originally supported those who opposed additional gun regulations. I belive they saw those who currently legally own guns as not being a great threat to the peace of society, but the scarce resources which would need to be re-deployed by the new plan would cause serious compromises in public safety.

Have those who have chosen to follow the law, including the registration of firearms, ever been the problem? Gun registration can have no effect on crime because criminals will not register their illegal firearms. So, of what use is registration but to provide a list for confiscation?

If you think this is off the wall, I heard from more than one source that the California state branch of the NRA had verified with the California Justice Department (or whatever the name is there) that California is supposed to be sending letters to those who registered so-called "assault weapons" after the original deadline of their anti-assault weapon bill (but during a state-sanctioned extended period) notifying them that their firearms are considered illegal and must be turned over to the state without any compensation whatsoever. These firearms cannot be sold or transferred out of the state. For the first time in American history firearms registration records are being used to confiscate firearms. The "right-wing wackos" have been saying that this would happen for years. Well, I guess they were right, weren't they? I wonder what else they'll turn out to be right about?
