I do not think Chemdex will do what you were asking about (putting small groups of people together to buy in bulk). I think this would create a large headache for Chemdex, and maybe increase costs for them which would in turn increase costs for us.

VWR is a supplier of other people's products. They have a huge catalog of items but most are not their own. They also do supply things with the VWR brand, but I do not think they actually manufacture the stuff themselves. For instance, they offer several chemicals that hold the VWR name. I am sure that they just have some manufacturer who makes the product and slaps a VWR brand name on the package. They also sell equipment with the VWR name as well.

It certainly will be interesting to price compare between VWR and Chemdex. I will let you know what I find out.
