For the most bang for the buck I recommend an Intel Celeron CPU and over clocking it. For experimenters who want the latest and greatest CPU features and want to buy something now I recommend a 450 Mhz Pentium III. If you are willing to wait until they are available an AMD K3 looks like it will be a viable alternative to a Pentium III. If you are looking to buy a hot gaming machine I recommend waiting until motherboards with a 133 MHz front side bus speed are widely available, most likely the last quarter of 1999 or the first quarter or 2000. Conclusion there is no easy answer to your question it really depends on what you objective is.
