Craig,

Good question. I think the release is interesting in a couple of areas. SCI has been around for a while and on the face has higher theoretical throughput than FC. It now appears to have been dropped because of higher overhead.

Sequent appears to be using the switched fabric to carry TCP/IP and using the fabric to interconnect all of the clustered disks to the processors. The last reference I can recall on the Sequent system the FC fabric was described as a cascaded system, with a software solution to maintain efficient traffic.

It will be interesting to see the final Sun solution. It may be fibre channel, but I think it is more likely to contain a different solution. I think it is possible to use a different low-latency switching modality for processors and still cluster disks on FC fabrics.
