"PMS" and bipolar disorder the same thing? Bipolar Affective Disorder tends to be a life long mood disorder, in which the moderate to severe cases are much more disabling than "PMS". In severe cases of Bipolar Disorder, the patients can experience delusions and hallucinations, and the patient can be disabled, even require hospitalization, for weeks or even months. Overall, Bipolar Disorder is a much more serious illness than "PMS", which is controversial to even call an illness.

Although the etiologies of both are not fully understood and probably multifactorial, these afflictions almost certainly have different etiologies. What is common between the two, is that both have a biological component to their etiologies, and serotonin is probably involved in both. But much more is involved.
