HVN, what I mean by "getting to the bandwidth" is this:

I'm referring to the means by which wavelengths are created and detected at the end points, and how they are ultimately used in a pluralistic setting... how spectrum is massaged and divvied up, how those wavelengths receive payloads which become mapped to diverse routes, and a plethora of other networking techniques, many of which are only beginning to be understood at this time.

DWDM is but one component of this, albeit a dominant one at this time, but I would be looking to other means of exploiting the carrying capability of fiber as time goes by, as well. One such approach appears to be gelling now over in the SilkRoad camp. Other approaches may combine DWDM with various bit optimizing schemes such as QAM and CDMA in certain situations.

I am still waiting to see how the SR model flushes out at the higher levels of trunking. See the SilkRoad thread here in SI if you haven't visited it before.
