I recently read an article about research on effective liars, which suggests that the most effective liars are able to convince themselves of the truth of the statement at the time it is made. I once shared office space with a lawyer who called it "believing your own bullshit." It can be very effective for those who are adept at the technique, as long as they are selective about the bullshit they buy into. I don't believe I could pull it off, myself.
