I doubt that the typical home user needs 100MB ethernet - most are happy at present with 2MB at present, and when digital streaming content becomes more important, 8mb will probably still satisfy most needs.

The goal of most people working that issue is "no new infrastructure". The 8Mb standards will allow either existing wiring (phone or power) or wireless at low cost in the next 6-12 months.
