The Pharisees considered wealth a proof of righteousness. Jesus startled them with this story in which a diseased beggar is rewarded and a rich man is punished. The rich man did not go to hell because of his wealth but because he was selfish with it. He did not feed Lazarus, take him in, or care for his health. He was hard-hearted in spite of his great blessings. The amount of money we have is not so important as the way we use it.

Souls are banished to hell for sins. we face decisions every day, with alternatives being to sin or not to sin. Making the right decision in real time is impossible to do every time. You do not know the consequences of every action. In the case of the story, the decision to let Lazarus lie there instead of helping was a sin.

Also, we are not saved by works or conduct, but what we do is the evidence of our faith.
