BTW, I did get a kick out of a Clinton speech recently, where he took on George W. Bush's "compassionate conservatism." Paraphrasing, Clinton defined "compassionate conservatism" thus: "I feel awful about your situation, really I do. And I wish that there was something I could do about it. But I can't."
The funny thing, of course, is that he's got it exactly right, at least insofar as government goes, conservatives believe that there are some things government shouldn't do, no matter how compelling the situation. This doesn't mean that individuals should do nothing, of course. Clinton understands it, but he also knows that many people want government to solve all ills, or to try to solve all ills, and there's a lot of votes for that position. |
