Well, it is likely that we are focused on somewhat different things. One dimension is the dispute over the canon, which doesn't mean the introduction of a St. John's style of education, but does mean respecting the texts that have been widely deemed excellent in literature, and drawing from them when teaching literary subjects. It means not making revisions on the basis of "affirmative action", but to due arguable literary merit. It means fighting trends like "deconstructionism" which seek to empty texts of all specifiable meaning...Another aspect is respect for the Founders, and a resistance to historical revisionism in grade school texts that would emphasize their flaws, or engage students in debates that were over their head. Yet another aspect is delicacy about setting children against their parents, by contradicting parental teaching on subjects like sexual morality. To give one more example, respect for the customs of the community dictates permitting practices like benedictions at commencement unless there is an over- riding reason to forbid them....
