Packer-Related News Story -------------------------------------------------- Packers' Robert Brooks calls it quits GREEN BAY, Wis., Aug. 2 (UPI) - Veteran wide receiver Robert Brooks of the Green Bay Packers, whose once promising career has been shut down the last three seasons by the constant pain of back and knee injuries, today (Monday) announced his retirement from the NFL. He played seven seasons in the pro ranks, all with the Packers. The 29-year-old Brooks, who told team officials of his decision late Sunday, confirmed the speculation at a news conference at team headquarters. He said he did not feel he was healthy enough to be able to regain the form that made him a two-time 1,000-yard receiver earlier this decade. The Packers now have a major dilemma at wide receiver, and Brooks' retirement may give more leverage to Antonio Freeman, who is a training camp holdout because of a contract dispute. The two had been pencilled as the team's likely starting wideouts this year. Last season, Brooks, who was hampered by back pain, was limited to 31 receptions for 420 yards, although he did score three touchdowns.
