I need to contact the people who are running our town, the local newspaper, and some key people to try to find out who's doing what about planning for our senior citizens, handicapped people, and others less fortunate in the event of severe problems.
I think that's a good idea.
When I saw the word "town" I realized wy response was based on an invalid assumption. In big, cosmopolitan areas, these things are handled by professionals. Volunteers need experience and qualifications. Occasionally there will be a call for warm bodies--people with 4 wheel drive vehicles or volunteers to wrap Christmas gifts for children, but, for the most part, they don't want do-good amateurs underfoot. [The very first time I tried to volunteer it was to teach English as a second language. They said they would be happy to sign me up for the training course, which, by the way, cost several hundred (circa 1975) dollars. I was incredulous.] If you live in a small community, the situation may be different. In either case, it's always a good idea for citizens to make sure their institutions are working and to pitch in if need be. Please let us know what you find out.
