Harry - Re: "What's your take on the new chip that SUN just announced? "

First of all, SUN announced their UltraSPARC III CPU in mid 1997 - for delivery in late 1998.

This was to be their bread-and-butter high end CPU for workstations and servers.

Not only didn't SUN deliver that chip in 1998, they didn't even TAPE IT OUT until early this year - around February or March as I recall.

And since Tape-Out, I haven't heard anything.

According to Sun's Web Site, the UltraSparc III isn't scheduled to SAMPLE until this summer - which should be around now. (See Below)

So, this NEW MAGIC chip will be another future World Dominator chip - just like al the Pico JAVA chips before it !!!

In summary - I would be surprised if this MAJC chip ever makes it to the market place.

Sun's scalable UltraSPARC-III solution enables intense multi-processing
Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced the third generation of its UltraSPARC microprocessor family, the UltraSPARC-III, which is designed to operate at 600 MHz. To meet the Internet's tidal wave of growth, and the demands for better internet performance, the UltraSPARC-III will be a highly scalable and robust networking solution that will enable MP systems with over 1,000 processors.

This announcement is more proof of Sun's commitment to providing highly scalable, reliable and robust networking solutions. The SPARCTM/SolarisTM platform has and continues to be at the heart of network computing, facilitating e-mail, e-commerce and the Internet itself. Sun's technology is driving the networked age and anyone from OEMs, CIOs or end users can benefit from this technology.

This microprocessor represents a step forward in performance for the SPARC family and addresses rapidly changing requirements in networked computing environments. The scalability of UltraSPARC-III makes it easy to support rapid infrastructure growth and it offers 100 percent binary compatibility for both the Solaris operating system and application software.

Using Sun's VIS instruction set for networking, media, imaging, and Java performance acceleration, the new processor is designed to offer a two to three times performance boost, without recompilation, compared with the UltraSPARCTM-II.

By delivering the next generation of UltraSPARC, Sun has established itself in the industry as a leading chipmaker. OEMs are expected to build systems incorporating the new UltraSPARC-III processors to create dedicated systems for intensive vertical market applications such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), Financial Analysis and Data Warehousing.

The UltraSPARC-III is expected to sample during the summer of 1999.
