America Online Inc (AOL) Microsoft Corp (MSFT) AOL is winning the technology battle over instant messaging but may lose the war as industry pressure grows for a way to allow the hugely popular service become as universal as e-mail. After more than a week of fighting Microsoft Corp. and others AOL executives made their clearest statement yet they will support an industry task force working to develop an open messaging standard. At the same time AOL formed its own advisory committee on the issue composed mainly of executives from companies well-known as Microsoft adversaries including Sun Microsystems, Novell, RealNetworks and Apple Computer.
