Ramsey - Aren't software mainly copyright material vs patents?

5 years ago a there was a good chance that a software patent would be:

a) rejected by the PTO

b) found invalid in court even if accepted by the PTO.

Thus it was often a waste of time for a company to patent software. However, recently the courts and the PTO have changed and, although it is still more problematic to patent software than hardware, it is now a reasonable method of protection. In many cases is the preferred method of IP protection since it protects against even redevelopment of the same idea, whereas copyright protection is only for prevention of exact copies.
