It may interest you to know that the founders of NTAP were Auspex employees. The VP of sales at NTAP was former Auspex.

NTAP literally focused on the dethroning (can you say "destruction") of Auspex in 1995-1997. They succeeded. They believed that Auspex had defined the NAS market and picking off their customers when those customers needed to upgrade would be easy and fun to do.

I won't go into the details of how they did it, but it boils down to price/performance. Auspex had built their machines on proprietary hardware. NTAP uses industry standard hardware.
