Ron-

Excellent post. I have been amazed at the reaction on this thread to Dr. Lee's case. Don't you know, it's all about racism!? I don't want to get involved with the current discussion- I fought that battle on this thread when the Lee case broke, and, as I recall, was roundly denounced. Impressively, people seem to think that the only information authorities have against Lee Wen Ho is that which has been vetted in public. If they can find flaws in the news reports, they conclude the evidence against Lee is some government hoax. I think such people have absolutely no sense of how classified operations function.

I applaud your efforts to bring a realistic voice on this matter to this thread. I would like to go on the record as saying everything you wrote about security practice in the post to which I am responding strikes me as accurate. Like many who have worked for Uncle Sam, I was angered that John Deutsch would flagrantly violate rules in a way that would impose a career change (or worse) to someone who worked under him. People citing him as an example of "that's the way things work" are a clear reminder of the damage people in charge can do when they fail to follow the procedures required by their organizations.
