Australian Gambling Report Released

Mon Jul 26 1999

Last Thursday, the Productivity Commission released its draft report on the Australian gambling industry. The report is the first of its kind in Australia, and can be compared to the controversial report released earlier this summer by the National Gambling Impact Study Commission in the US. The Productivity Commission concludes that although the gambling industry produces little net gain in jobs or GDP, the enjoyment most Australians derive from gambling results in net benefits. The report recommends that policy should be directed at reducing the costs of problem gambling, and calls for the regulation of Internet gambling as opposed to a ban.
