Nice post Exciton - nice to get a little intellectual discourse back to the thread. Regarding your 'gut' - go with it. There is no incentive for systems vendors to become more vertically integrated. Quite the opposite. Whether its the CMOS/silicon guys or the optical component makers, merchant producers offer the Nortels,LUs, Alcatels etc. a great value proposition. "You spend your time and money designing the killer boxes and company-specific ASICs and components, and we'll supply you with everything else in order to highly increase your time to market. Oh and by the way, we can produce it cheaper, better and faster than you can as well." I believe it is an absolute certainty that the outsourcing trend will continue. This favors all the quality merchant houses for years to come. Bulldozer
