I'm not sure what dictionary you are using, but the American Heritage
Dictionary does not use the word sustain.

There is little doubt in my mind that MLK was a martyr. However, there is no rule that I am aware of that says a cause can't have more than one martyr.

In fact, the civil rights cause has more than one martyr. I think Medgar Evers would qualify as a martyr in the minds of many people.
