I am appalled to hear that there is no air-conditioning in your office.

Think about that statement for a moment.

For how many centuries did the entire human race live without any air conditioning? What does it say about our culture that we can be "appalled" that someone's office is not air-conditioned?

Our grandparents, and my parents, and even I, had to grow up with no air conditioning other than open windows, hand-operated fans, and water sprays. The human race DID survive.

I am not criticizing your comment, which is instinctive and natural, so much as observing how rapidly the expectations of what a normal life is should be.

(I remember the first time I read about the financial basic need standard set by the government. The meal cost was compared to the cost of a MacDonald's hamburger, fries, and a Coke. Not to the cost of a home cooked meal, but to the cost of fast food. It gave me great sadness to realize that this is how our government measures our lives.
