I attended the kick-off last Wed at the Four Seasons. Large crowd. Quite impressive. When I initially looked at the concept I wasn't too excited. Yet the more I study it, the more I begin to think that this is an excellent biz model. I like the idea that it's an internet vertical portal in a predominantly fragmented business. Apparently the biz of selling original fine art and the print spin-offs is coordinated at various venues throughout the year as artists and galleries jockey to place the inventory. The inefficiencies of this routine will be replaced with the ecommerce opportunities on the internet. The usual task of auctioning an original piece of work at a specific location, preceeding the publication/distribution of a series of prints, will be replaced with a "live" internet auction, a la Victoria's Secret's model show a couple of months ago. Good idea and it sounds like RealNetworks is gearing up for the first show in September. What's also interesting is that the profile of the potential customers mirrors very well with the profiles of current internet users.(ie. higher education, higher incomes etc). So, after concluding that the biz model was viable I am completing some DD on whether there's any money in the biz. I'll let you know.
