The market may well not do what you expect. I've been trading stocks for about 30 years and while the last 15 years have seen some spectacular quick crashes, there are other likely scenarios.

In particular a long term bear market could develop, where the slow bleeding continues for many weeks or months and the market would never have the 40% losses this thread is expecting in a short term, just a 5% loss every week for a few months. Actually we may well be in the start of this phase as folks get out worried about Y2K problems and wanting to take their profits.

There WILL be money to be made, but it may be from a much lower base and take a longer time than most the investors are used to. There's no reason to believe that the rapid gyration of the market and particularily the internet stocks will continue in the next decade.
