Bombardier to Supply Electrical and Mechanical Systems for Vancouver Skytrain's new Line
AUGUST 3, 1999 MONTREAL, QUEBEC--Bombardier Transportation announced today, through its Kingston, Ontario-based Transit Systems, the signing of a contract with Rapid Transit Project (RTP) 2000 Ltd. for the design and supply of the Electrical and Mechanical (E & M) systems required for the 21-km expansion to Vancouver's fully automated SkyTrain system. The expansion, to be constructed in the Broadway - Lougheed and New Westminster - Coquitlam Corridors, will link downtown Vancouver with neighbouring municipalities in the lower mainland. The first section is expected to enter revenue service by mid-year 2001. The approximate value of this E & M System contract for the new Advanced Rapid Transit (ART) line is CA $205 million (US $136 million). Bombardier's scope of work for the expansion project includes automatic train control and communications systems, power supply and distribution system, trackwork, power rail, platform and guideway intrusion detection systems, system engineering and integration, and testing and commissioning for 21 km of dual-track guideway. The first of 60 ART MK II SkyTrain vehicles, contracted by RTP 2000 with Bombardier last October, will be delivered towards the latter part of the year 2000. The expansion to the existing 29-km ART SkyTrain will use Bombardier's LIM-powered technology, recently deployed on the LRT System 2 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and selected last year for the JFK International Airport AIRTRAIN system in New York. This contract follows the start of construction of Bombardier's Centre for Advanced Transit Systems in Burnaby, British Columbia, which was recently announced on April 30, 1999. As well as housing a manufacturing facility, the Centre will play an important role in selling urban transit systems and operations and maintenance training to markets globally. Commenting on behalf of Bombardier Transportation, President and Chief Operating Officer Jean-Yves Leblanc stated that "The contract to expand this world-class system is an excellent opportunity for Bombardier to build on SkyTrain's technological success". He further noted that "Bombardier is committed to maximising the participation of British Columbia's solid engineering and supplier base and the realisation of the SkyTrain expansion will endorse this effort."
