Oops! Make that Marianne Backus. She wrote the original Fortran for IBM on a 36-22-36. It was called Beachware originally and then hardware but was changed to curveware and then software. Originally all code was one-piece. Now strings are encoded with abandon.

I don't believe Gilligan wrote compilers. That could be why the S.S. Minnow went off course. Cumulative error in the course control code.
