This is certainly a solid small exploration and production play, but it is hardly undiscovered now. Merrill Lynch picked up coverage in mid-June, which raised the profile in the U.S.

Rather than Peters, if you want a large holder to follow, I'd recommend Centennial Energy Partners, a hedge fund run by Peter Seldin. Peter is a sharp oil and gas investor; the hedge fund currently owns more than 10% of Compton's shares.

The large move last week was probably due to a research report from Newcrest that raised production estimates for 1999 and 2000.

Final thought: although this stock is certainly not as good a buy as it was under C$1.50, there's probably some decent upside left as investors move away from some more expensive large cap names such as CNQ or AEC and look for better value. Compton gets better research coverage than other companies its size, so among smaller cap names, there will probably be a little better focus.
