My previous comment pertains to the image gnet projects with its new HQ. Just within the Seattle area itself, gnet has a lot of competition: rnwk, msft, dscm, amzn, et. al. They all are good companies with good products, they all offer stock options, etc. One way to differentiate itself from the pack is by the working environment it creates for its employees. Microsoft's campus appears pleasant but boring enough (from pictures, it looks like your typical Silicon Valley corporate campus. Correct me anyone if I am wrong.) amzn's new HQ in that old hospital strikes me as weird. Looks like an antiquated prison or Russian administrative building or something (by the freeway, anyway). It makes a strange statement, imo.
I always thought gnet's HQ on the 50th floor of a slick corporate office building never suited it. I mean, can you imagine going to work in jeans, t-shirt and Birkenstocks and riding elevators with stuffed shirts in Brooks Brothers suits? And fighting downtown traffic everyday? The new HQ fits the more casual culture of an internet company. It's near a nice waterfront park, perfect for jogging and walking at lunch. It will be a little easier to get to, but still very convenient to nice restaurants and shopping. I'd love to work there! |
