I agree that everyone else on this thread (other, of course, than I) has a high (I would suggest in several cases inflated) opinion of him- or her-self. But I was not talking individually, but societally. Some (I first said many but substitute some to avoid a discussion over how many) intellectuals (and also many in the media) tend to deprecate the accomplishments of our society. They delight in exposing wrongs instead of celebrating rights. Look, for example, at all the recent emphasis on the Henning-Jefferson controversy. Do you think we will ever see one tenth as much "ink" celebrating the accomplishments of Jefferson? We get scholarly criticisms of the occasional travesties of justice without any mention of the many, many times our law enforcement system actually works to protect the innocent and punish the guilty.

I do the same thing at times. Look at the exchange Rambi and I had, where I was broadly condemning our social services agencies and she took me to task, pointing out that there were many concerned people in the system and that it had protected many vulnerable children.

I think this trend is worsening. Many others have noted the difference between the media today examines the lives of our leaders as compared with the way the media even 30 years ago behaved.

This is, of course, an area which deserves extended discussion, and I regret that I don't have the time to get into a good exchange with you and others here over it. There are aspects within aspects that should be examined. But I have clients who need my more direct services!
