David, I just signed on to find the DOW down 140. But MDT is up almost 7% today. According to company news their pacemaker business is doing well and they hope to increase earnings 15%. Maybe that's what drove the stock up. According to Zacks, analysts expected only an increase from last years 2.19 to 2.23. But a 15% increase would mean earnings of 2.52. Maybe you want to check it at quote.yahoo.com From there click on research to get the Zacks estimates. Please let me know what you think. I am surprised that a little jawboning can cause a 7% rise.
