Applied Materials (AMAT: news, msgs) shares received a boost from comments by Hambrecht & Quist analyst Eric Chen. Chen anticipates "another great quarter" for Applied Materials when it reports third-quarter results on August 17.


Chen raised his quarterly estimate on the chip-equipment company to 56 cents per share from 50 cents. This compares to the First Call consensus estimate of 53 cents a share. Applied Materials shares increased 1 7/8 to 73 3/4.
