Lots to think about in your post, Steve. You have a point about each of the PRC's actions being different for the different events, but it sure seems to me that there is a central theme. I'm certainly no "sinophile" (is that a word? <g>), and will yield to anyone more knowledgable than I, but I have the strong impression that the actions are all geared to an "us against the world" attitude, both internally and externally. It works well for building a spirit of nationalism internally, and might help economic negotiations externally by encouraging a "sinophobic" (again, ?) environment where other nations are too eager to make agreements just to avoid potential conflicts.
Also, I thought Ron R's speculation that all this might be a diversion for a takeover of some other islands was a pretty interesting thought.
Finally, I know you intended your question to be retorical, but I have an answer anyway: I'm an investor; give me predictability anytime. Until it becomes "normal," change is bad; then it is good. If anyone understands that, I owe 'em a cigar! <g>
