Corel Responds to Speculative Media Report of
Ontario Security Commission Activities

OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 1999--The unconfirmed and unsubstantiated story in a newspaper today of the
Ontario Securities Commission's consideration of a Notice of Hearing came as a complete surprise to Corel Corporation
(NASDAQ:CORL - news; TSE:COR. - news) and its president and chief executive officer Dr. Michael Cowpland.

No information has been conveyed by the OSC to either Corel or Dr. Cowpland suggesting that a Notice of Hearing is under
consideration by that regulatory body.

The Securities Act of Ontario prohibits the disclosure of confidential information relating to any investigation that may be
ongoing at the Ontario Securities Commission.

Inquiries of the OSC on behalf of Corel and Dr. Cowpland have confirmed the Commission's refusal to comment on the
newspaper story or its propriety. Accordingly, Corel and Dr. Cowpland have no further comment.
