The "spy scandal" was exposed and publicized, to all appearances prematurely, because opposition politicians wanted a scandal to fling at a vulnerable administration. An intelligence advantage that could have led to the exposure of a fullblown espionage network (if Lee was a spy, he was not acting alone) may have been compromised for a political purpose: creating a short term scandal.

I have an unpleasant feeling that a great deal of the confrontational rhetoric being aimed at China these days is basically tough-guy political posturing aimed at domestic consumption. I doubt that it will accomplish much beyond strengthening the position of the Beijing hardliners. Hardly a result to be desired, unless you want a new cold war. I suppose some do.
